Chattooga Section 4

The Chattooga river is the mother river in the southeast. When this river has water there is a lot of whitewater and wilderness opportunities to be had. There are numerous creeks in the area along with nice river running in the bottom stretches. These pictures are from section four the last section before the river abruptly stops into the man made lake Tugaloo.

Cannon Falls is a sweet waterfall on Frogtown creek. It is the signature drop of the run and sure is a SPECTACULAR waterfall.

With the drought over and things returning to normal in the southeast, Tallulah season is upon us..... The Upper Tallulah was runnin so we rallied the troops up there for an afternoon run, then went to camp at the gorge and fire off some oceana the next day......

THE CANNON FALLS

Well after the second wettest spring on record in the southeast the rain let up for a while and then one day......... it rained again. It did not stop raining for nearly a week and when all was said and done their were spots with 20 inches of rain. Lots of boating to be had and lots of excellent water. We ended up chillin in NOR GA. Runnin the shit here are a few photos of the times we had.

Well, the Raven Fork is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Cherokee Indians were definatley a smart tribe that lived in an unmatched land. The Raven fork is in the middle of this land and looks like it belongs in a different world. You know those places that are too good to be true? Well this is one of them. For us as kayakers we walk through life with a different outlook, most kayakers seem more humble than the average working man. I personally think it is because we have special places like the Raven, Linville, upper cherry, Dinkey, and soooo many other bad ass places to enjoy kayaking. I feel blessed and extremely lucky to have found kayaking in my life, and places like the Fork to enjoy. Makes you think about what this place used to look like before all the bullshit.... Excuse me...

The Tallulah Gorge, Nor Ga

The Tallulah Gorge is located in northeast Georgia just outside of Clarkesville. It has many class IV-IV+ rapids and one big class V slide called Oceana. The Tallulah is really fun and has a lot of rapids for such a short run.

Dukes Creek

Dukes Creek is one of the steepest creeks I have ever paddled including the Ravens. Anyway with that said, This creek is sick, fun, clean and super big. David Cohen and I logged three descents today and dropped a total of 750 feet of pure NOR GA goodness. Here are some pictures taken of us by are good friend Matt Hollingsworth.

Below here the Mullet Madness begins....... And Just for the Love.....Followed by Rock Bottom, Which was recently run by David at a little higher flow. I would say this is a good medium low level. Dukes has a very good window of runnable flows and is usually runnable after everything else has dropped out. Shows what the lack of construction and preservation can do for you, thankfully Dukes is in an undisturbed watershed.

Overflow creek is located in north eastern Georgia and takes about two inches of rain. It is a super classic run with waterfalls and many sweet boofs.

DODD CREEK

Dodd Creek is a beautiful stream tucked away in a tight gorge right outside of Helen Georgia. Dodd runs a lot due to its undisturbed watershed and tight gorge that has seven major rapids. It is very steep with must make eddies, anyone who tries to run this creek please try to keep a low profile. Pictures at low flow (Not Running)

Lower Stekoa Creek

Stekoa Creek has always intrest me ever since the first time i passed by it on the Chattooga. Stekoa has a lot of flat water a couple massive waterfall rapids, great scenery etc.. What has detoured me in the past was the water quality. However this creek always runs. Always. So far I have not puked or diareahed on myself. I think the upper Stekoa is a lot better but the water quality is supposively worse.

Russell Fork: The Heart of Appalachia

The Russell Fork River located on the boarder of Virginia and Kentucky is fantastic. It releases water every weekend in October. The rapids are good class IV-V fun rapids with powerful holes and continuous nature. The Russell Fork is a great run and good alternative when nothing is running.

Thanks to Tuxedo Hydro station we as kayakers are able to keep our sanity in the desert, or southeast as others remember it. Yesterday it rained almost 3 inches on the green. The next day the level was around nine inches of sweetness and reminded us all how good she really is!

This waterfall is about eighty feet off vertical. Never run. The falls below it has been run and looks like a lot of fun. I think the big one goes.

The Rain is Coming.

However hurricane Gustav does not look like it will bring much rain to the southeast, the tropics are firing off. Tropical Storm Hannah looks like it will deliver rain to the Southeast and tropical depression nine is definitly coming this way. Hopefully T.D. Nine will follow in Hannahs footsteps, wherever it goes it looks like the Southeast will get rain from both Hannah and T.D. Nine. Hopefully T.D. Nine wont be devastating to the Georgia coast as it has potential to be a big one. Maybe, just maybe THE SOUTHEAST IS BACK!!!!

It Finally Rained Here In the Southeast

Tropical depression Fay came through and dropped over six inches of rain widespread and dropped twelve inches at my house. Also a tornado came through my neighborhood, every stream in the southeast flash flooded, and we drove around all day looking for the smallest stream we could find. We ended up at moccasin creek with the best of intentions, however when we put in we found ourselves fighting the rhodo usually located six feet above the creek. Scary day, we boated for nearly five hundred yards before we were scrambling for the banks. Many people swam today, Tuesday August 26, 2008, many people made bad decisions to put on rivers with it raining the way that it was, and many people barely made it. Let this be a reminder to everyone who loves kayaking, the weather and river will always be more powerful than we and much respect for the river is needed for successful missions on the river. Always be aware of what is going on around you and your surroundings and if you feel like it has rained to much....... Then it probably has!

British Columbia

B.C. is ridiculous, it has plenty of whitewater for anyone. While we were in B.C. our trip got cut short but we ran some badass whitewater in four days. Callaghan, The mine section of the ashlu, tatlow and a few others. Callaghan is a super quality creek run in its own right not to mention. We were real lucky to be able to do all of these runs in the same week. Then we cruized down to the hood for a couple days before our flight back to the parched southeast.

Below S Turn on the Little White, this river is so much fun. I was here in April and the level was about double the flow, it is still just as fun! The Ldub got game!

I finally got someone to go on a blind mission with me into the unknown in the high sierra. What we found was nothing short of epic or amazing. The sierra hold an array of domes and beautiful rivers to explore, this place has all that. Drew Duval and I explored this place on June 2, 2008.

Never stop exploring, this river is located in the John Muir wilderness.
